MARA Holdings, a leading Bitcoin (BTC) mining firm and currently the world’s second-largest publicly-traded holder of the flagship digital asset, has completed the acquisition of a wind farm in Texas.

The company announced it closed the acquisition deal for Hansford County-based wind farm via a press release on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

In this latest expansion effort, MARA’s operations will benefit from an additional interconnection capacity of 240 megawatts. There’s also another 114 megawatts of nameplate wind capacity.

“The closing of this acquisition represents a significant milestone in MARA’s ongoing transformation as we expand our asset base, following our strategic shift from an asset-light to an asset-heavy business model,” Fred Thiel, MARA Holdings chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement.

Extending miners’ economic lives

According to MARA, the new site is set to tap into the last-generation ASIC miners that were either set to be written off or sold on the secondary market.

Now these hardware will be repurposed and energized. This means 100% renewable and zero-marginal energy costs. It also means the mining company will be able to cut its production costs via vertical integration.

“With this added renewable energy asset, MARA now owns and operates 136 megawatts of generating capacity, strengthening our position across the entire energy generation and bitcoin mining process. This acquisition not only extends the economic life of our ASIC miners, but also drives reduction in operational costs, bringing us closer to achieving near net-zero operating costs,” Thiel added.

MARA Holdings chief financial officer Salman Khan added via a post on X:

“When paired with Bitcoin mining, intermittent wind energy reduces grid congestion during peak times, revitalizes renewable assets, and extends the economic life of mining machines. A triple win for miners, the grid, and wind producers,”

MARA first announced the acquisition of the wind farm in Dec. 2024.

At the time, the company noted that the new site would use the company’s Advanced ASIC Retirement Initiative to extend the lives of Bitcoin mining hardware.

According to a press release on Aug. 6, CoreWeave has agreed to add to its hosting deal with the Bitcoin miner, with additional infrastructure set to see Core Scientific deliver another 112 megawatts for Coreeave’s Nvidia graphic processing units.

Core Scientific and CoreWeave deal

The new adjustments to the deal will roll in before the end of 2024, with operations expected to go live in early 2026. Core Scientific’s multi-year deal with CoreWeave will add roughly $2 billion in new hosting revenue, with the 12-year contract projected bring in over $6.7 billion in cumulative revenue after the initial contract’s expected total of $4.7 billion

“We have now contracted with CoreWeave for a total of 382 megawatts of HPC infrastructure, reflecting the strong demand for high-power data center infrastructure and the unique ability of our team to deliver it,” Core Scientific CEO Adam Sullivan said.

“CoreWeave has one remaining option for 118 megawatts of our infrastructure and we are actively building our pipeline of potential new sites to expand our infrastructure portfolio and business opportunity. By maximizing the value and increasing the scope of our infrastructure portfolio for HPC hosting and bitcoin mining, we believe we can grow our business and the value we deliver to clients and shareholders,” Sullivan noted.

CORZ stock price

Core Scientific shares traded around $9.63 at the time of writing, more than 17% up on the day. CORZ is up 179% year-to-date. CORZ stock has traded higher since a breakout above $5 in May, with recent news helping the bullish case.

In comparison, BTC is up just over 5% in the past 24 hours as it changes hands around $56,900. 

While the value is up since the dip to near $49k on Aug. 5, Bitcoin remains more than 12% in the red in the past week. In the past month, BTC/USD is up 28% at the time of writing.

Core Scientific surges 17% after latest CoreWeave announcement

Bitcoin miner CleanSpark announced today that it has entered an agreement to acquire GRIID Infrastructure in an all-stock transaction valued at $155 million.

According to a press release the merger agreement also saw the two Bitcoin mining companies seal an exclusive hosting agreement for all of GRIID’s currently available power. 20 MW of this power will immediately be allocated to CleanSpark.

“We are looking forward to welcoming the GRIID team into the CleanSpark family and we are excited to apply the CleanSpark way, carefully honed alongside the communities we operate in Georgia and Mississippi, to GRIID’s impressive pipeline in Tennessee,” CleanSpark CEO Zach Bradford said in a statement.

CleanSpark eyes 400 MW by 2026

CleanSpark, which has closed other deals before, expects to build out its operations in Tennessee over the next three years. This should see the miner reach operational capacity it managed in Georgia over the same period.

“That achievement was to build out over 400 MW of infrastructure backed by valuable, long-term power contracts,” Bradford noted.

The miner targets surpassing 100 MW in Tennessee by the end of this year, 200 MW in 2025 and over 400 MW in 2026.

Deal expected to close in Q3

Per the announcement, CleanSpark’s acquisition of GRIID has already received unanimous approval from the Boards of Directors of both companies.

As such, they expect the deal will close in Q3, 2024. However, this is still subject to approval by GRIID shareholders as well as other customary closing conditions.

CleanSpark’s acquisition of GRIID comes as another Bitcoin miner Riot Platforms’ plans to take over Bitfarms hit a snag. In the latest development around the saga, Riot has reportedly decided to go for an overhaul of the Bitfarms’ board by taking up three seats.
