Global firms such as Robinhood and OSL Group are expanding into Indonesia amid clearer rules.

Indonesia has drawn a clearer legal boundary around its fast-growing crypto market.

The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has released an official whitelist of licensed digital asset platforms, setting out which exchanges are legally allowed to operate in the country.

The move gives investors a single reference point to check whether a crypto provider is authorised and signals a more structured phase of oversight for digital assets.

It also arrives as global firms step up efforts to enter Southeast Asia’s largest economy, where crypto participation has expanded rapidly alongside traditional capital markets.

The whitelist names 29 approved entities and their associated applications or platforms.

According to Otoritas Jasa Keuangan, the list is intended to help the public distinguish between licensed operators and those that are not authorised.

Users have been urged to trade only with platforms included on the list and to treat any unlisted services as unlicensed operators.

Whitelist reshapes crypto access

By publishing a formal register, the regulator has effectively tightened the gateway into Indonesia’s crypto ecosystem.

Until now, retail users often relied on fragmented information to verify whether an exchange was compliant.

The whitelist consolidates this process, offering a regulator-backed reference that places responsibility on platforms to maintain their licensed status.

The announcement also gives enforcement greater clarity.

Platforms operating outside the list are now explicitly positioned as unauthorised, strengthening the regulator’s hand in tackling illicit or non-compliant activity across digital asset markets.

Global firms move into Indonesia

The regulatory clarity comes as international crypto and trading firms seek exposure to Indonesia’s expanding investor base.

Earlier this month, Robinhood signed agreements to acquire Indonesian brokerage Buana Capital and licensed digital asset trader PT Pedagang Aset Kripto.

The transactions provide the company with a direct route into a market that counts more than 19 million capital-market investors and around 17 million crypto traders.

In September, Hong Kong-based OSL Group completed its acquisition of local exchange Koinsayang.

The deal secured regulatory approval for OSL to offer both spot and derivatives trading services in Indonesia, reinforcing the country’s appeal to established regional players.

Rules tighten around digital assets

The whitelist follows OJK Regulation No. 23/2025, which introduces stricter controls over digital financial assets, including crypto and related derivatives.

Under the regulation, exchanges are barred from facilitating trades in assets that are not registered or approved by a licensed digital asset exchange.

The framework also formalises the treatment of digital asset derivatives. Exchanges must obtain prior approval from the regulator before offering such products.

In addition, platforms are required to implement margin mechanisms using segregated funds or digital assets, while consumers must pass a knowledge test before accessing derivatives trading.

The regulator has said these measures are designed to align Indonesia’s market with international supervisory standards and enhance investor protection.

Robinhood expands into Canada with WonderFi acquisition

Robinhood has agreed to acquire WonderFi for US$179 million, marking its entry into Canada.

Robinhood Markets has announced that it has agreed to acquire Vancouver-based WonderFi Technologies in an all-cash transaction valued at US$179 million, marking the retail brokerage’s official entry into the Canadian cryptocurrency market.

Under the terms of the deal, WonderFi shareholders will receive C$0.36 per share, representing a 41% premium over the firm’s closing price before the announcement, in a transaction that values the Canadian firm at approximately C$250 million.

Investors have responded positively to the news, sending Robinhood shares up 6.4% to trade around $61 on Wednesday, while WonderFi’s stock on the Toronto Stock Exchange jumped 34% to C$0.24, highlighting the market’s enthusiasm for cross-border crypto consolidation.

Veteran investor Kevin O’Leary, a prominent backer of WonderFi and Shark Tank personality, praised the acquisition as a testament to WonderFi’s “picks and shovels” approach, which focuses on durable infrastructure rather than speculative token bets.

O’Leary remarked in a recent interview that the proliferation of stablecoins and real-time settlement capabilities will play a more decisive role in crypto’s mainstream adoption than volatility-driven price rallies.

Robinhood’s entry into the Canadian market

Robinhood’s expansion into Canada via WonderFi complements the company’s mission to democratize finance for all, tapping into a market where retail crypto adoption continues to accelerate alongside growing mainstream interest.

The acquisition brings under Robinhood’s umbrella two of Canada’s most prominent crypto trading platforms, Bitbuy and Coinsquare, each of which has built a loyal user base since their respective inceptions.

By integrating WonderFi’s infrastructure and expertise, Robinhood gains immediate access to a market that saw over C$3.57 billion in trading volume on WonderFi’s platforms during fiscal 2024, reflecting a 28% year-over-year increase in activity.

All of WonderFi’s existing employees, whose ranks now exceed 140 professionals specialising in customer support and regulatory compliance, will transition to Robinhood, bolstering the US firm’s ability to navigate Canada’s distinct financial oversight environment.

Notably, the acquisition follows Robinhood’s announcement earlier this year that it expects to close its US$200 million purchase of Bitstamp, the Luxembourg-based crypto exchange, in the first half of 2025, further underscoring the company’s global ambitions.

Robinhood is evolving beyond commission-free equities

The move underscores Robinhood’s broader strategy to evolve beyond its origins as a commission-free equities trading app by cultivating a more diversified, borderless financial services ecosystem centred on digital assets.

Robinhood’s Chief Executive Officer, Vlad Tenev, emphasised that the WonderFi acquisition represents “a critical first step” in establishing the company’s Canadian presence, noting that the region’s regulatory framework and investor adoption rates position it as a natural complement to Robinhood’s existing markets.

Analysts at Mizuho predicted that a successful Canadian launch could ultimately contribute up to $250 million in incremental annual revenue, assuming Robinhood can leverage WonderFi’s local brand recognition and operational footprint.

Robinhood’s Q1 2025 earnings report, released just days before the WonderFi deal, showcased a 50% surge in revenue to $927 million, driven in large part by a $252 million contribution from its crypto trading business.

The company’s net income of $336 million for the quarter reflected a 114% increase year-over-year, positioning Robinhood among the most profitable US fintech platforms in an industry still grappling with regulatory uncertainty.

If executed smoothly, the acquisition could serve as a blueprint for Robinhood’s future forays into other regulated markets, leveraging a playbook of acquiring established, locally compliant crypto services rather than building from scratch.

Robinhood will launch the crypto offerings to customers in Singapore via Bitstamp
The retail investing firm acquired Bitstamp for $200 million in June 2024.

Robinhood, a popular retail investing platform, has revealed plans that could see it expand its crypto product offering to Singapore before the end of 2025.

In a report on Tuesday, Bloomberg said Robinhood Markets was eyeing the entry into Singapore via its recently acquired crypto platform Bitstamp.

Robinhood’s expansion plans through its European-based digital-assets exchange will also include a foray across the Asia-Pacific region.

According to Robinhood Crypto VP and general manager Johann Kerbrat, the company’s effort will involve local local regulators. While the platform has not offered a specific launch date, the expectation is that the crypto services and products will be available to Singaporean customers before the end of 2025.

Kerbrat shared the overall plan during an interview with Bloomberg News.

The Bitstamp deal

Robinhood announced its acquisition of the Luxembourg-based Bitstamp in June 2024, with the $200 million deal expected to close in the first half of 2025.

At the time of the initial announcement, Robinhood’s plans were to leverage Bitstamp’s exchange technology to accelerate its global expansion. Bringing crypto products to users in Singapore is part of this goal.

In October last year, Robinhood Crypto unveiled crypto transfers for its customers in Europe. The update allowed EU users of the app to deposit and withdraw over 20 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and the USDC stablecoin.

Robinhood’s business is regulated by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). The company also holds the BitLicense from the New York State Department of Financial Services.

Meanwhile, Bitstamp has secured more than 50 regulatory approvals, with licenses in Singapore, the United Kingdom and the EU.
