Many Ethereum developers opposed Vitalik’s plan to increase the gas limit of the Ethereum network.
Ethereum (ETH), the second top crypto asset by market cap after Bitcoin, was co-founded by Vitalik Buterin, Gavin Wood, Charles Hoskinson, Anthony Di Iorio, and Joseph Lubin. In the present time, the majority of the Decentralised Finance (Defi) protocols are running on the Ethereum network. Trading & transaction fee on the ETH network is very high and the Ethereum community developers are trying their best to increase the scalability & speed of the Ethereum network, to fulfil the demand of Ethereum network users.
On 11 Jan 2024, Vitalik Buterin shared his idea of increasing the net throughput of the Ethereum network by increasing the network limit by 33%.
According to Vitalik, increasing the gas limit to the proposed 40 million from the current 30 million will increase the network capacity & scalability at a better level.
Following Vitalik’s suggestion, many Ethereum community developers jumped against this proposed idea and explained multiple drawbacks.
According to Wijden, Ethereum’s current data is 900 GB but as we know storage is cheap, so size is not the issue because everyone can store that big amount of data, but accessing and modifying it will become slower and slower,” before adding there are “no concrete solutions yet for state growth.”
Also noted that such changes will increase synchronisation times and make building diverse clients harder.
Gnosis co-founder Martin Köppelmann said that an increment in gas limit will lead to an increment in the bandwidth of the network.
Ethereum team lead Péter Szilágyi also raised similar kinds of issues against Vitalik’s proposed idea and said that it will surely increase the synchronisation time & also DoS potential will grow simultaneously.
Now it will be interesting to see what response will come from Vitalik and whether he will propose any solution against these challenges or directly reject his own idea.
