Vitalik Buterin and the Cardano founder have advised the public to stay vigilant regarding politicians claiming to be “pro-crypto” but lacking understanding of the technology. They emphasize the importance of awareness when evaluating political stances on digital assets and related technologies.
Currently, former US President Donald Trump is garnering significant support, with strong prospects for winning the 2024 US presidential election. Trump’s newfound pro-crypto stance has gained him considerable backing from the crypto community. In response, several rival politicians have also begun discussing Bitcoin extensively to appeal to crypto enthusiasts and gain their support.
On 17 July 2024, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin urged crypto users not to base political allegiances solely on candidates’ “pro-crypto” labels.
Through a detailed blog post, he emphasized the importance of examining candidates’ stances on privacy, digital identity, and access to information.
Buterin also criticized initiatives like Coinbase’s “Stand With Crypto” movement for focusing narrowly on cryptocurrency-related bills without considering broader technological freedoms. He advised evaluating politicians’ underlying values to understand their priorities during potential conflicts.
In response, Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano & co-founder of the Ethereum blockchain, also responded & said that his primary goal has always been to keep government interference in crypto to a minimum.
He pointed out that in regions where complete avoidance of government intervention is not feasible, the choice becomes clear for Bitcoin & crypto supporters.
According to Hoskinson, if governments pursue policies such as implementing central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), targeting non-custodial wallets with lawsuits, systematically arresting crypto executives, categorizing everything as securities, and intimidating exchanges, then voters should reject such approaches.
Furthermore, the Cardano founder highlighted that politics operates on the principle of cause and effect, suggesting that politicians who understand the negative impact of hostile actions towards the crypto industry are more likely to refrain from them to avoid losing elections.
In short, Hoskinson advocated for voters to prioritize supporting pro-Crypto candidates in the upcoming elections, framing it as a critical issue for the survival and growth of the American crypto industry but simultaneously warned to remain away from fake pro-Crypto politicians.
