Key Takeaways

  • Strategy paid $75.7 million for 950 BTC.
  • The purchase used cash, not weekly ATM proceeds.
  • Holdings increased by only about 0.1%.
  • STRC buybacks exceeded spending on Bitcoin.

Strategy buys 950 BTC without using its ATM programs

Strategy acquired 950 BTC between September 14 and September 20 at an average price of $79,670 per coin, including fees and expenses, according to its September 21 filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

The filing identifies “USD Cash” as the source of the $75.7 million purchase. It does not connect the acquisition to a stock or debt sale completed during the same reporting period.

Strategy also reported no sales through its at-the-market, or ATM, programs that week. These programs allow the company to sell common or preferred shares gradually at prevailing market prices. In this case, Strategy added Bitcoin without recording fresh ATM proceeds alongside the purchase.

The latest Bitcoin was bought below Monday’s market price

Bitcoin traded near $85,000 at approximately 12:15 UTC on September 21 after moving above its May 2026 high. That market price was about 6.7% above the $79,670 average paid for Strategy’s latest batch.

The difference is not a realized profit because Strategy continues to hold the coins. It only compares the market price at that moment with the average cost of the 950 BTC acquired before September 21.

The purchase increased Strategy’s position by roughly 0.1%, so it did not materially change the company’s exposure to Bitcoin. For scale, privately held SpaceX reportedly owns 18,712 BTC, while Strategy’s 846,000 BTC position is more than 45 times larger.

Strategy’s total Bitcoin cost reaches $63.8 billion

The filing places Strategy’s aggregate Bitcoin acquisition cost at $63.8 billion and its overall average purchase price at $75,416 per coin, including fees and expenses.

At $85,000 per Bitcoin, the 846,000-coin position would be worth approximately $71.9 billion. That is about $8.1 billion, or 12.7%, above the reported cost basis. Both figures are unrealized and would change immediately with Bitcoin’s price.

Strategy ended September 20 with $1.05 billion in USD Cash and a separate $5.04 billion reserve for preferred-stock dividends and interest payments. During the week, it used $57.4 million from that reserve for dividends and debt interest.

The financing choice matters more than the purchase size

The 950 BTC addition was small beside Strategy’s existing holdings. The more revealing part of the filing is how the company allocated cash while making it.

Strategy spent $174 million repurchasing 1.77 million shares of its STRC preferred stock—more than twice the amount spent on Bitcoin. The filing therefore records two separate uses of cash: expanding the BTC position and reducing the amount of STRC outstanding.

One week does not establish a new financing pattern. However, the purchase shows that Strategy can continue adding Bitcoin without relying on ATM sales in every reporting period. Its next filing will indicate whether this was an isolated cash-funded acquisition or part of a longer sequence.
