Ripple Faces Developer Backlash Over Edited Podcast Clip

Ripple is facing significant backlash from XRP Ledger (XRPL) developers due to an incident involving the editing of a podcast clip, which has raised concerns about transparency and community engagement. This controversy centres on a podcast episode from Ripple’s series, “Exploring Ripple’s New Stablecoin Ripple USD,” featuring CTO David Schwartz and Ripple President Monica Long. The series discusses the launch of Ripple’s new stablecoin and various aspects of the XRP Ledger ecosystem.

The main issue arose when Ripple edited a statement made by Monica Long in the podcast. In the original version, Long talked about developer engagement on the XRP Ledger, stating, “We’ve put all of that effort in, and ultimately, it’s a bit chicken and egg to get developer momentum on the XRP Ledger, which we are seeing. There are already thousands of developers building projects, but to really see that flywheel pick up more momentum, you need to have high-quality assets. In particular, right now, we need onramps and offramps that are reliable and efficient, so that’s mostly been in the form of stablecoins.” However, in the version posted on YouTube, the phrase mentioning “thousands of developers building projects” was removed.

This edit sparked immediate criticism from the XRPL developer community. Daniel “No” Keller, CTO of Eminence and an XRPL Ambassador, was among the first to publicly question Ripple’s motives. Keller tweeted at Schwartz and Long, asking why the podcast was altered and accusing Ripple of failing the community. He highlighted the removal of the “thousands of developers” statement and expressed frustration over Ripple’s handling of the situation. Keller’s tweet stated, “Hey David Schwartz and Monica Long! Why would you upload a podcast clip and then take it down to re-upload an altered version? What happened to the ‘thousands of developers’ bit? Ripple and @RippleX have failed the community. Why keep pretending everything is okay?”

Keller’s comments reflect a broader sentiment among XRPL developers who feel undervalued and misled by Ripple’s actions. 

Stephen Chip, co-founder of onthechain.io, criticised Ripple for not paying enough attention to supporting its developer community.

Stephen Chip expressed that many developers, including himself, feel neglected regarding grant funding from Ripple. He noted that more people have been rejected for grants than have received them. While he acknowledged the new Japan-Korea fund, he emphasised the need for Ripple to fulfil its original promise of grant support.

Community member and dUNL validator Vet defended Ripple, suggesting the podcast edit was likely made to correct a possible overstatement, reflecting Ripple’s internal knowledge of the ecosystem.
