If you’re one of those people who hoped a DAO would save Blockbuster, your wish has been granted. BlockbusterDAO announced its intentions the other day to “liberate Blockbuster” and “collectively govern the brand…”
Specifically, they intend to turn Blockbuster into a Web3 brand and “a powerhouse in the future of the film industry.” The core business would be focused around “DeFilm” and starting an ad decentralized streaming service.
The company believes the Blockbuster brand is an enduring one and points to some data from Retail Live showing improving brand scores. “(Since 2013,) sentiment has improved from a score of -20 to positive 14. In other words, people’s feelings for Blockbuster turned positive once its stores were gone.”

Blockbuster DAO’s Plans
According to the DAO, the plan is to offer $5 million USD or more for the brand. The amount is subject to change based on NFT sales. Dish Network currently owns blockbuster. Famously, only one store in Bend, Oregon, remains.
It’s unclear what the DAOs plans are for the last Blockbuster store — which leases the name from Dish Network. We reached out to BlockbusterDAO for comment but have yet to hear back at press time.
As for their content strategy, the DAO plans to add IP by touring the festival circuit. Once they’ve built up a collection of IP and reached certain investment levels, they plan to develop original content. “Step 5: Option speculavie [sic] screenplays for Blockbuster Originals Once we’ve developed a platform for content publication, we can start investing in original content,” they said via Twitter.
Though before that can happen, the DAO will have to overcome the Ken Griffin’s of the world from keeping them from their dreams.
Alternative To Netflix
Initially, Netflix had benefitted mostly from positive press because of their disinclination towards canceling TV series and saving popular ones from cancelation (like Arrested Development).
However, the positive press has dwindled in recent years, making a case for a viable decentralized streaming option.
